Digital photography is both part of my job and a personal hobby. My photographs were quite orthodox until one day while working with these images I happened to turn one of my horizon pictures of southern Utah sideways. The view was unique and further "playing" with the effects features of the program led to what I felt was a new kind of artform. The strange effect is achieved by cropping photos carefully as to composition, then turning them 90° then flipping the picture horizontally and merging it with the previous picture. Clouds no longer lazily float on a flat plain, but surge upward dramatically. I was captived by this new vision. Picture after picture lose their recognizability and throw the viewer into a very other worldly place. Very ordinary landscapes became amazingly alien. I titled them as they came off of my computer: "Vertigo," "Arabesque," "Birth of the Buddha," "Rapture," "Omphalus," "Mother Sky," and so on, but after showing them to friends and family I realized that the human mind is the creative force in the business of perception. Nobody seemed to see exactly what I saw in each composition, and no two saw the same. My titles seemed to limit the viewer's imagination, or cause him to argue with me about what is there. Most of the original images can be seen by simply turning the page up to the right and covering the bottom half with the hand or a piece of white paper. The world then reassembles in the mind in proper perspective and size . It is my hope that viewers see wondrous things: faces, mythic creatures, castles in the sky, rockets rising to the cosmos, and tapestries of accidental design
